Gate 1: Do You Need to Program It?

This is the single most expensive question in the catalog, so answer it first. The base G1, base H2, and base R1 do not support secondary development. There is no SDK, and there is no upgrade path from a base unit to an Edu unit later. If you buy a base humanoid and then discover your team needs to write code for it, you are not buying an upgrade kit. You are buying a second robot.

The rule: any research, custom development, or student programming requires an Edu tier. Base models are operated through Unitree's standard app and preloaded behaviors only. This one fork can roughly triple the price of a humanoid, which is exactly why it needs to be decided before anything else.

On the quadruped side the same logic applies: the Go2 Pro and Go2 X are consumer units with no developer access, while the Go2 Edu unlocks the SDK.

Gate 2: How Much Onboard Compute?

Base units ship with an 8-core CPU that handles locomotion and the standard app. Edu tiers add NVIDIA Jetson Orin compute at 100 TOPS, which is what you need for onboard perception, navigation stacks, and learned policies running on the robot rather than a tethered workstation. At the top of the range, the H2 Edu supports top-tier AI compute options for running large model workloads directly onboard. If your research plan involves onboard inference, budget for the compute tier now rather than retrofitting later.

Gate 3: Which Hands?

Hands are one of the largest line items in humanoid configuration pricing, and they are easy to overlook. The options run from simple grippers, to three-finger hands, to five-finger dexterous hands, with tactile-sensing versions available on higher tiers. If your work is locomotion, balance, or whole-body control, basic end effectors are fine and save real money. If your work is manipulation research, the dexterous and tactile options are the point of the purchase, and they explain much of the price spread between otherwise similar configurations.

Gate 4: Walking Robot or Data-Acquisition Platform?

Not every embodied-AI program needs legs. If your goal is teleoperation and imitation-learning data collection, a dedicated data platform is often more productive per dollar than a bipedal humanoid. As2 and A2: The Middle Tier

The As2 series, $9,500 to $19,900, is the step up when a Go2 is not quite enough but an industrial platform is overkill. Official As2 tiers are Air, Pro, and Edu; at approx. 20 kg it delivers roughly twice the power performance of the Go2, with an IP54 rating on the Pro and Edu (none on the Air). Humanoids: R1, G1, and H2

R1: The Accessible Humanoid

The R1 Air at $6,870 (approx. 27 kg, 20 degrees of freedom, monocular camera) is the least expensive credible humanoid on the market, and the R1 Basic at $8,990 (approx. 29 kg, 26 degrees of freedom, binocular depth camera) adds capability for light use. For institutions, the R1 Edu line runs from the Edu Standard at $15,950 through the R1 Edu Smart at $18,900 to Edu Pro configurations between $19,800 and $32,900. Unitree's official tiers are R1 Air, R1 (Base), and R1 EDU; the Edu Smart and Edu Pro configurations are dealer builds on the R1 EDU tier. It stands 1.82 m tall, weighs approx. 70 kg, offers 31 degrees of freedom, and runs approx. 3 hours per charge, with Intel Core i5 compute standard (i7 on the Edu) and an optional NVIDIA Jetson AGX Thor (2,070 TOPS). The standard H2 is $40,900 and the H2 Edu is $68,900. Choose the H2 when your research specifically requires human-scale reach, stride, and workspace interaction that the smaller G1 cannot replicate.

What Can These Robots Actually Do Today?

Marketing videos set expectations that hardware does not always meet, so here is the honest state of the art. Walking, balance recovery, and preloaded motion routines are genuinely reliable on current Unitree platforms. Stair climbing works in demos but remains unreliable in unstructured environments and carries real fall risk. Manipulation is still rudimentary: picking up arbitrary objects reliably is an open research problem, not a shipped feature. The viral acrobatics you have seen are trained policies that are staged or teleoperated; they are impressive control engineering, not autonomous decision-making.

Two practical consequences follow. First, these platforms carry no collaborative-safety certification such as ISO 13482, so treat them as lab and demonstration equipment, not as machines that share space with the public unattended. Second, for humanoid development work we recommend a protective gantry ($850), which pays for itself the first time a policy fails mid-experiment. We would rather set expectations correctly than field a warranty claim on a robot that was asked to do something no robot can do yet.
