The Unitree Go2 following its handler with no controller in hand. Manufacturer footage.

A robot dog is the hardest-working STEM purchase a school can make. It walks into a classroom, climbs the stairs, follows a student across the field and takes a fall without breaking. It costs less than a humanoid and runs longer, and on the right model students write the code that makes it move.

This guide compares every robot dog we sell from Unitree and AgiBot for K-12 and university programs: what each one costs in the US, which ones students can program, what to buy with it, how it fits each grade level, and how schools buy. Every model here is legal to import and sell in the United States, and every price is current.

Three Questions That Pick the Robot

Question 1

Will students write code?

If yes, buy an Edu tier: the D1 Edu, D1 Ultra or Go2 Edu. Neither brand upgrades a Pro to an Edu later, so this is the decision that matters most.

Question 2

Indoors or outdoors?

Classrooms, gyms and dry fields suit every model. Rain, mud or winter work points to the IP54 D1 family or, for real field work, the IP56 A2.

Question 3

Research or teaching?

Teaching programs get the most from the D1 Edu and its curriculum. Research labs doing SLAM, reinforcement learning or perception want the Go2 Edu and its open-source stack.

Unitree Go2: The Most Popular Robot Dog in Education

The Go2 is the robot dog most students have already seen on video. All three education models share the same 15 kg (33 lb) chassis, twelve joint motors and the Unitree 4D LiDAR L2, which scans 360 by 96 degrees so the robot sees all the way around itself. What changes between them is speed, battery and how far into the software your students can go.

Go2 Pro $3,790 | Go2 X $7,600

Demos and clubsApp controlAges 14+
  • The Go2 Pro runs from the Unitree Go app with graphical programming, photo and video from its front camera and over-the-air updates that add new skills.
  • Its side-follow system keeps it walking alongside a student with nobody holding a controller, which is why it owns a room at an open house.
  • Handstands, jumps and fall recovery run on the same twelve joints that walk it down a hallway, so it is a live lesson in balance control.
  • The Go2 X adds speed (3.7 m/s), a higher 12 kg (26 lb) maximum payload and limited development access over a cable.

Know before you buy: neither allows full student programming. If code is the point, go straight to the Go2 Edu.

Safety and Classroom Setup

  • An adult operates the robot. Keep the remote or app in a teacher's hand during demos, and use the stop command freely.
  • Mark a robot area. A taped zone in a gym or hallway gives the robot room to move and students a clear line to stand behind.
  • Start new code in simulation. On the Go2 Edu, test in MuJoCo first, then run on the real robot at low speed.
  • Respect the weather ratings. The Go2 is a dry-conditions robot. The D1 handles splashes, and the A2 handles rain and cold.
  • Manage batteries. Charge on a hard surface, store packs at partial charge over breaks and retire any swollen pack.
  • Mind the LiDAR mounts. Unitree prohibits side rolls on a Go2 with a LiDAR or dock mounted.

FCC, NDAA and Federal Funds

FCC: every robot dog in this guide holds an FCC equipment authorization granted before the FCC's July 28, 2026 Covered List rule: the Unitree Go2 family under 2A5PE-YUSHU006, the Unitree A2 under 2A5PE-YUSHU011 and the AgiBot D1 Pro, Edu and Ultra under 2BTPT-ZYCXD105U. Each one is verifiable at apps.fcc.gov/oetcf/eas. Some quadrupeds, including the Unitree Go2-W and As2, cannot currently be sold in the US, so they are not in this guide.

NDAA and Section 889: Unitree and AgiBot are Chinese manufacturers, so neither is NDAA compliant. Those rules mainly affect federal agencies and federally funded contracts. If federal money is involved, confirm eligibility with your grants office before you budget. Most state, district and university purchases are not affected.

Our Unitree FCC guide and AgiBot FCC guide walk through every grant.

Robot Dog or Humanoid?

A robot dog costs less, runs longer and takes more abuse, which makes it the right first robot for most programs. A humanoid draws a bigger crowd and teaches whole-body control and human interaction. Many schools start with a quadruped and add a humanoid the following year. Our humanoid robots for STEM guide covers the Unitree R1, G1, H2 and AgiBot X2 the same way.

The Unitree Go2 Edu, from $11,190. It is the most widely used research quadruped, with full SDK access in C++ and Python, low-level joint control, ROS 2, simulation and reinforcement learning tools on GitHub, and NVIDIA Jetson Orin compute onboard.

What is the cheapest robot dog a school can buy?
The Unitree Go2 Pro at $3,790. It runs from the Unitree Go app with graphical programming, follows students on its own and carries a 360 degree 4D LiDAR. It does not support writing your own code, so it suits demos, clubs and younger grades.

Can students program a robot dog in Python?
Yes, on the Go2 Edu. Unitree publishes unitree_sdk2_python alongside the C++ SDK, so a student with basic Python can make the robot stand, walk and turn. The AgiBot D1 Edu and D1 Ultra also support secondary development through AgiBot's SDK.

What is the difference between the Go2 Pro, Go2 X and Go2 Edu?
Same 15 kg chassis and 4D LiDAR. The Pro is app-driven with no code access. The X is faster at 3.7 m/s and allows limited development over a cable. The Edu adds the full SDK, low-level joint control, foot force sensors, a 15,000 mAh battery for 2 to 4 hours and Jetson Orin compute.

What is the difference between the AgiBot D1 Pro and D1 Edu?
They are mechanically identical. The D1 Edu adds an SDK and expansion ports for Ethernet, USB, power, SBUS and UART. The D1 Pro has neither and cannot be upgraded later.

Can a Go2 Pro or D1 Pro be upgraded to the Edu version later?
No. On both brands the development interfaces are set at build. If anyone will write code in year two, buy the Edu now.

How long does a robot dog battery last?
About 1 to 2 hours on the Go2 Pro, Go2 X and AgiBot D1 family, 2 to 4 hours on the Go2 Edu with its 15,000 mAh pack, and over 5 hours on the Unitree A2. Every model uses a swappable battery, so a spare pack covers a full teaching day.

Can a robot dog be used outside?
The AgiBot D1 family is IP54 and handles dust and light rain from 0 to 40 C. The Go2 family is a dry-conditions robot rated 5 to 35 C. For rain, mud and freezing weather the Unitree A2 is IP56 and runs from -20 to 55 C.

Are robot dogs safe around students?
Yes, run the way manufacturers intend: an adult operator, a clear marked area, students supervised and the robot sitting or powered down when people crowd in. Unitree recommends the Go2 for ages 14 and up and the A2 for adult operators only.

What accessories should a school buy with a robot dog?
A spare battery first. For the Go2 that is $560 for the 8,000 mAh pack or $750 for the 15,000 mAh pack, plus a $180 fast charger and $56 replacement foot pads. Programs running autonomous routes add the $1,044 self-charging board.

Is there a curriculum for teaching with a robot dog?
Yes. AgiBot offers a 96-hour, two-semester D1 curriculum developed with a Tsinghua University team, with over 200 video lessons and over 300 exercises, quoted separately. For the Go2, Unitree's open-source SDK examples and simulators on GitHub are the foundation most university courses build on.
