The AgiBot D1 family spans a factor of nine in price, from the $4,599 D1 Pro to the $42,999 D1 Max. That range is not a good-better-best ladder. These are three genuinely different machines aimed at three different jobs, and the wrong pick is expensive in both directions: buy the Max for a classroom and you have overspent by $38,000, buy the Pro for an outdoor inspection route and it will not survive the winter.

The Three Decisions That Actually Matter

1. Will anyone write code against it?

This is the Pro-versus-Edu question and it is binary. The D1 Pro has no expansion ports and no SDK. The D1 Edu exposes Ethernet, USB, power, SBUS and UART, and supports secondary development and custom modification.

A D1 Pro cannot be upgraded to an Edu later. The interfaces are configured at build. If there is any realistic chance a student, a researcher, or a systems integrator will want to program the robot or hang a LiDAR on it, the $2,600 difference is the cheapest insurance in this catalog.

2. Does it go outside, and for how long?

The Pro, Edu and Ultra are all IP54. That covers dust and splashing water. It does not cover immersion, pressure washing, or a sustained downpour, and none of the three are rated below 0°C. They are indoor and fair-weather machines.

The D1 Max is IP67, which is a different class of deployment entirely. It is rated for long-term outdoor and industrial operation. If the robot is going to live on a substation route or a pipeline yard, the protection rating is the reason you buy the Max, not the payload.

Endurance follows the same split. One to two hours is a demo session or a lab period. The Max runs over five hours unloaded and a stable 3.5 hours at rated payload, and its dual batteries are hot-swappable, so it returns to service without a charge cycle.

3. How much weight, honestly?

Pro, Edu and Ultra all carry 5 kg (11 lb) effective payload. That is enough for a LiDAR, an RGB-D camera, and a small compute box. It is not enough for a thermal camera plus a gas sensor plus a gimbal.

The D1 Max is rated for 25 kg (55 lb) with a 150 kg structural maximum. Read those two numbers carefully: 25 kg is the figure the endurance and range specifications are based on. The 150 kg number is what the chassis can physically bear, not a duty cycle you should plan routes around.

Where the D1 Ultra Fits

The Ultra is the least obvious model in the line, because on paper it looks like a D1 Edu with $800 added for 0.2 m/s and half a kilo. The real difference is operating range: roughly 6 km on a charge, which is what turns a robot that can walk into a robot that can complete a patrol route. If you are doing perimeter checks, campus security evaluation, or field research where the robot has to actually cover ground, that is the model. US Equipment Authorization

All four models hold FCC equipment authorization granted before the FCC's 28 July 2026 rule change. The D1 Pro, Edu and Ultra share FCC ID 2BTPT-ZYCXD105U; the D1 Max holds 2BTPT-ZYCXD125M. Both grants are held by AgiBot Innovation (Shanghai) Technology Co., Ltd. under grantee code 2BTPT, and you can verify either one yourself in the FCC's equipment authorization database at apps.fcc.gov/oetcf/eas. FCC authorization is not the same thing as NDAA procurement eligibility. They are separate regimes answering separate questions. If you are buying with federal funds, confirm your procurement requirements before you spec any of these.

Which AgiBot D1 is best for a university lab?
The D1 Edu at $7,199 for teaching and coursework, or the D1 Ultra at $7,999 if the research involves field work where range matters. Both support secondary development. The Pro does not.

Can the D1 Pro be upgraded to an Edu?

Is the D1 Max worth nine times the D1 Pro?

Do any of the D1 models work below freezing?
The Pro, Edu and Ultra are rated 0°C to 40°C. Do not plan cold-weather deployments around them.
