Quick answer: The best robot for a trade show booth is usually a quadruped, not a humanoid. Every year a few booths at every major show have a robot, and every year most of them sit switched off by 2pm on day two. Usually not because the robot failed, but because nobody planned for the batteries, nobody scripted what it would actually say, or the aisle was too crowded to let it move.

This guide covers what actually matters when you are buying a robot to work a booth: the form factor decision, the constraints nobody mentions in the brochure, and honest pricing.

Humanoid or Quadruped? Start Here

This is the decision that drives everything else, and most people get it backwards.

A humanoid is the bigger spectacle. It photographs well, it generates social posts, and if your company sells AI or advanced technology it is on-brand in a way a robot dog is not. It is also heavier, more fragile, more expensive, and a fall in a crowded aisle is a genuine incident rather than an embarrassment.

A quadruped, in practice, does the job better for most booths. It is stable, it self-rights, it is hard to knock over, and it fits in a case you can check as luggage. Most importantly people approach it. A robot dog reads as friendly and invites interaction, which is the entire point of putting a robot in a booth.

Rule of thumb: if your goal is press coverage and brand impression, look at a humanoid. If your goal is getting strangers to stop walking and start talking to your staff, buy a quadruped and spend the difference on the rest of the activation.

The Three Constraints Nobody Plans For

1. Battery life is shorter than a show day

This is the single most common failure. Most humanoids run about two hours per charge. Most quadrupeds run one to two hours. A show day is eight to ten hours, across two or three days.

That means four or five battery swaps a day, every day. So the real question is not what the robot costs, it is what a spare battery costs and how many you need. On a quadruped, spares run a few hundred dollars. On a humanoid they can be well over a thousand each.

Better still, ask whether the platform supports an autonomous charging dock. On the Unitree Go2 line, a self-charging board is about $1,044 and the robot returns and recharges itself between demos. That is usually a smarter purchase than a third spare battery, and it removes a job from your booth staff.

2. "Programmable" does not mean what you think

Nearly every buyer says they want the robot to "say specific things." That requirement quietly doubles the budget, because on most platforms it means SDK access, and SDK access is a higher trim level.

On the Unitree line specifically, the consumer configurations do not include the SDK. The Go2 Pro at $3,790 has a speaker, a microphone, and offline voice functions including intercom and audio playback, but its stock voice assistant is not customisable. If you want the robot to deliver your script on cue, you want the Go2 Edu at $11,190, which has full SDK access.

Worth knowing: the base Unitree G1 at $21,600 does not include SDK access, while the cheaper R1 Edu Smart at $18,900 does. If scripted speech is a hard requirement, that is a trap worth avoiding.

There is also a cheaper path people forget: pre-record your lines as audio files and trigger them from the app while the robot moves. It is operator-driven rather than programmed, but for a booth it often looks identical to the visitor.

3. The robot attracts people. It does not run your game.

If your booth activation involves a game, a quiz, or a competition, be clear about the division of labour. A robot will greet people, draw a crowd, deliver lines and perform. It will not referee, keep score, or respond to what a player does. That is custom development on any platform, and it is the most common source of disappointment after delivery.

Scope it explicitly before you buy: the robot is the crowd magnet, your staff run the activity.

Practical Booth Notes

  • Check the floor. Show floors are carpet over concrete, which affects traction and gait. Ask before you assume, especially for a bipedal humanoid.
  • Measure your footprint. A robot needs clear space to move and a boundary that keeps it out of the aisle. Free-roaming a walking robot through a packed aisle is how incidents happen.
  • Assign an operator. These are supervised machines. Someone competent needs to own the robot for the whole show, not fit it around booth duty.
  • Rehearse before you ship. Scripting the lines and routines takes longer than people expect. Get the robot at least two weeks before the show.
  • Plan the freight. Quadrupeds travel in a case. Humanoids are heavier and need real handling, plus drayage at the venue.

Buy or Rent?

If this is a one-off activation, renting through an events agency is often cheaper once you account for freight, an operator, and the scripting time. Buying makes sense when you will use the robot more than about twice a year, when you want it in the office between shows as a talking point, or when you need control over exactly what it says and does.

One thing that tips the maths toward buying: a robot does not stop earning after the show. Teams routinely reuse them for recruiting events, customer visits, internal demos, and social content.

How Long Does It Take to Get One?

Lead time is the constraint that actually kills booth robot projects, because the show date cannot move. Ask for a written lead time before you commit, and build in a two-week buffer so you can script and rehearse. If a supplier will not confirm a delivery date in writing, treat that as the answer.
