Read Before You Buy: SDK Access Is Fixed at Purchase

The single most expensive mistake buyers make with Unitree humanoids is ordering a base G1 for a research program. Base and Pro configurations ship as demonstration platforms: they walk, balance, and run Unitree's stock behaviors, but they do not include the secondary development SDK that research and custom-application work requires. SDK access, dexterous hands, and compute upgrades are only available on Edu configurations, and there is no upgrade path after purchase. You cannot buy a base G1 now and add SDK access later; the configuration you order is the configuration you keep. Is the base Unitree G1 programmable?

No. The base G1 and G1 Pro are demonstration platforms without the secondary development SDK. If you need to program the robot, you need a G1 Edu configuration, and there is no post-purchase upgrade path from base to Edu.

What is the cheapest programmable Unitree humanoid?

The R1 Edu Standard at $15,950 is the least expensive Unitree humanoid with full SDK access for development work. The $6,870 R1 Air is the cheapest humanoid overall, but like the base G1 it is not a development platform.
