Why the R1 Edu Smart Stands Out

The R1 Edu Smart is built on Unitree's R1 EDU platform, the only R1 tier with secondary development support. It pairs 26 to 40 degrees of freedom and an optional dexterous hand with a binocular depth camera and optional NVIDIA Orin compute, giving labs a real humanoid to program.

Runs Full Speed.

The R1 Edu Smart walks, balances, and runs on its own two feet. Dynamic balancing keeps this approx. 29 kg biped steady whether it is walking or at a full run.

Dynamic Balance.

With 26 to 40 degrees of freedom and an optional dexterous hand, the R1 Edu Smart has the agility to hold its balance through fast, dynamic movement.

Acrobatic Control.

Built on Unitree's R1 EDU platform with a binocular depth camera and multimodal speech-and-vision AI onboard, the R1 Edu Smart moves with the precise, dynamic control of a real humanoid research platform.

Built to Develop On.

The R1 Edu Smart is the only R1 tier with secondary development support, with an optional NVIDIA Orin compute module (40 to 100 TOPS) and a swappable battery good for about an hour of runtime per charge. It fits a single grant line item rather than a capital request.

FAQs

What's included with the R1 Edu Smart, and what costs extra?

The base R1 Edu Smart configuration ships with the humanoid robot, a remote control, a charger, and a hard transport case. Options such as the dexterous hand, the NVIDIA Orin compute module (40 to 100 TOPS), the LiDAR package, and spare batteries are configured and quoted separately, so you only pay for what your research needs. Tell us your project goals and we will match the compute, sensing, and hand options to your budget.

How soon can the R1 Edu Smart ship?

Lead time depends on your configuration and factory availability. In-stock units go out quickly, while factory-configured builds with LiDAR, Orin compute, or dexterous hands take longer. We confirm the current lead time when you order or request a quote and keep you informed through delivery.

What does the warranty cover and where is it serviced?

Each unit carries a 12-month manufacturer warranty serviced through Unitree's authorized US distribution, which means US-based repair rather than shipping your robot overseas. Extended coverage options are available when you request a quote. Global Drone HQ supports you before and after the sale.

Does the R1 Edu Smart support an SDK and secondary development?

Yes. The R1 EDU platform is the only R1 tier with secondary development support, so the Edu Smart is built for writing and deploying your own code rather than running fixed demos. You can add an optional NVIDIA Orin compute module (40 to 100 TOPS) for onboard AI, perception, and learning workloads. This is the main reason research labs choose the EDU tier over the R1 Air or R1 Basic.

How long does the battery last, and can I order spares?

The R1 Edu Smart uses a swappable battery pack that delivers roughly one hour of runtime per charge. For back-to-back lab sessions or demos, we recommend ordering spare packs so you can hot-swap and keep working while one charges. Spare batteries are quoted alongside the robot.

What does a lab need to run the R1 Edu Smart safely?

The R1 Edu Smart is a research platform intended for operators 18 and up, and it needs a clear, dry indoor operating space within a 0 to 40 degrees C range; it is not waterproof or dustproof. Unitree recommends a protective frame or stand during startup and extended standing, and a protective mount is not included by default. Plan your early development sessions accordingly or ask us about mounting options.

Do you accept purchase orders from universities and government buyers?

Yes. We regularly handle university, government, and enterprise procurement, including formal quotes, vendor registration, W-9 documentation, and purchase orders for verified institutions. Send us your requirements and we will prepare the paperwork your procurement office needs.

Is the R1 Edu Smart NDAA compliant?

No. Unitree is a Chinese manufacturer, so the R1 Edu Smart is not NDAA compliant and is not intended for federal programs that require NDAA-compliant hardware. This does not affect most university labs, corporate R&D teams, and commercial buyers, who make up the majority of humanoid research customers. If your funding source has specific sourcing restrictions, confirm them before ordering.

How does the R1 Edu Smart compare to the R1 Edu Pro and the cheaper R1 models?

The R1 Edu Smart sits in the EDU tier with 26 to 40 degrees of freedom, a binocular depth camera, secondary development support, and optional Orin compute and LiDAR. The lower-cost R1 Air and R1 Basic do not include the developer SDK, so they suit budget entry and STEM programs rather than active research. Step up to the R1 Edu Pro when you want more compute, LiDAR, or included dexterous hands out of the box, or pair the Smart with the R1 A5 dual-arm robot for manipulation work.

Why order through Global Drone HQ instead of importing directly?

Gray-market imports come with no US warranty support and often lack English documentation or firmware updates. Our robots are sourced through Unitree's authorized US distribution with US-based service, and we support your team before and after the sale. You also get PO-friendly quotes and procurement paperwork that direct imports cannot offer.
