The DJI Matrice 400 is DJI's heavy enterprise platform and the successor to the discontinued Matrice 350 RTK. It lifts up to 6 kg, flies up to 59 minutes, and swaps between thermal, LiDAR and full-frame mapping payloads on the same airframe.

This review covers what it does that smaller drones cannot, what a working kit costs, and when a Matrice 4T or Matrice 30T is the smarter buy. Every spec below is checked against DJI's published Matrice 400 specifications.

Quick Answer

  • Best for public safety and inspection: Matrice 400 + Zenmuse H30T, $22,060. Thermal, zoom and a 3,000 m rangefinder on a 59-minute airframe.
  • Best for LiDAR mapping: Matrice 400 + Zenmuse L3, $27,850. Survey-grade point clouds under forest canopy.
  • Best for photogrammetry: Matrice 400 + Zenmuse P1, $18,080. Full-frame mapping for orthomosaics and 3D models.
  • Skip it if: you fly short thermal jobs from a truck. A Matrice 4T at $7,849 does that for a third of the money.

Matrice 400 vs Matrice 30T vs Matrice 4

Aircraft Price Camera Flight time Water protection Transmission (FCC)
Matrice 400 $10,450 + payload Swappable: H30T, L3, P1, H30, L2 59 min IP55 40 km
Matrice 30T $12,602 Built-in thermal, zoom, wide, rangefinder 41 min IP55 15 km

Matrice 4E $5,189 Built-in 20MP mechanical-shutter mapping camera 49 min None published 25 km

The Matrice 400 is the only one of the four that changes sensors. That is the whole decision. If one camera does every job you fly, a compact Matrice 4 or the all-weather 30T costs less and deploys faster. If you need LiDAR, full-frame mapping, two payloads at once, or a 1280×1024 thermal sensor, the M400 is the platform.

Four Questions That Decide It

Sensors

Do you need more than one camera?

The M400 swaps between the H30T, L3, P1, H30 and L2. Every smaller DJI enterprise drone has its camera built in.

Mapping

Do you need LiDAR?

The Zenmuse L3 needs the M400. If photogrammetry alone is enough, a Matrice 4E at $5,189 maps well for far less.

Endurance

How long are your missions?

Up to 59 minutes with an H30T versus 41 on the 30T and 49 on the Matrice 4. Long perimeter searches and corridor surveys favor the M400.

Weather

Do you fly in rain?

The M400 and 30T are IP55. DJI publishes no IP rating for the Matrice 4E or 4T, so a rain-capable fleet means one of these two.

Matrice 400 Payloads and Prices

DJI lists the Zenmuse L3, H30, H30T, L2 and P1 as compatible gimbal cameras, plus the AP100 parachute, Zenmuse S1 spotlight, Zenmuse V1 speaker and Manifold 3 onboard computer. These three cover most buyers.

Public Safety and Patrol

For police, fire and search teams the M400 is an H30T carrier with endurance. Fifty-nine minutes on a single launch covers a full perimeter search or a long incident without rotating aircraft, and Dual Control Mode lets a second operator run the payload while the pilot flies.

Two details matter more than they look. The built-in ADS-B In receiver picks up crewed aircraft up to 20 km away, which helps when a helicopter joins the scene. And the dual gimbal connector carries two payloads of up to 950 g each, so the 920 g H30T can fly alongside a second sensor.

LiDAR and Mapping

The M400 is DJI's LiDAR platform. The Zenmuse L3 rides on its own gimbal connector, the airframe holds RTK to 1 cm + 1 ppm, and 59 minutes of flight means fewer battery swaps on a large block. DJI's published case study shows the M400 and L3 mapping 3,000 years of hidden archaeology in two weeks.

Inspection and Power Lines

Wire strikes end inspection programs, and this is where the M400's sensing earns its price. DJI rates the rotating LiDAR to detect a 21.6 mm power line at 35 m, and the mmWave radar to detect the same wire at 50 m, on top of omnidirectional vision. For utility and tower work with an H30T, that margin is the reason to choose the M400 over a lighter drone.

Where the Matrice 400 Falls Short

Size

It is a big aircraft

It weighs 9.74 kg with batteries before the payload and spans 980 × 760 mm unfolded. Teams that launch within a minute of arrival are better served by a Matrice 4T.

Cost

The airframe is only the start

A useful thermal kit is about $27,800. Budget the payload, batteries and charging together.

Docking

It does not dock

The Dock 3 takes only the Matrice 4D and 4TD. See our Dock 3 review.

Compliance

It is not NDAA compliant

That rules it out for many federally funded programs. See our NDAA guide.

How to Buy

  1. Request a quote for a payload kit, or order the airframe directly from the Matrice 400 page.
  2. Pay by ACH, wire or card. Tax-exempt agencies purchase tax-free with a valid exemption certificate on file.
