To live stream from a DJI drone, you push the camera feed from the flight app to a streaming platform over the internet. On most current DJI drones you do this right inside the DJI Fly or DJI Pilot app: open the live streaming option, choose your platform or paste an RTMP link, and start the stream. Below is the full step-by-step, the settings that actually matter, fixes for the usual problems, and an honest look at when the app method is not enough.
What you need before you start
- A DJI drone and controller that support live streaming (most enterprise and recent consumer models do).
- A strong, stable internet connection on the device running the app, usually your phone or a smart controller with a SIM or Wi-Fi.
- An account on your target platform (YouTube, Facebook, Twitch, or a custom RTMP server).
- For YouTube, a channel that is enabled for live streaming, which can take up to 24 hours to activate the first time.
Step-by-step: streaming from the DJI Fly app
- Get the drone online. Make sure the phone or controller running the app has a solid data or Wi-Fi connection. The stream rides on this link.
- Open the camera view in the DJI Fly or DJI Pilot app and go to the transmission or live streaming menu (often under the "..." or settings icon).
- Select your platform. Choose the built-in option for YouTube, Facebook, or Twitch, or select custom RTMP to paste a stream URL and key from any platform.
- Sign in or paste your stream key. For a custom RTMP server, copy the server URL and stream key from your platform's live dashboard.
- Set your quality. Choose resolution and bitrate (see below).
- Start the stream, confirm it is live on your platform's dashboard, and fly.
The best settings for a stable stream
The most common mistake is pushing more bitrate than your connection can carry, which causes buffering and drops. Match the stream to the link you actually have:
- 1080p at 3,000 to 6,000 kbps is a reliable target on a good LTE or 5G connection.
- Drop to 720p if your signal is weak or unstable, a lower-resolution stream that stays up beats a sharp one that keeps dropping.
- Use 30 fps unless you specifically need 60, since higher frame rates need more bandwidth.
Troubleshooting common problems
- Stream keeps buffering or dropping: lower the bitrate and resolution. Your connection is the bottleneck, not the drone.
- Cannot find the live streaming option: update the app, and confirm your specific drone and controller support streaming, since not every model does.
- Stream will not start on YouTube: your channel may not be enabled for live yet, or the stream key may be wrong.
- High delay: several seconds of latency is normal for this method and cannot be fully removed with app streaming.
The limits of app streaming
App streaming is free, built in, and perfect for personal use, marketing clips, real estate, and casual event coverage. It has two hard limits you cannot tune away. First, the whole stream depends on a single internet connection, so if that signal weakens the feed stutters or drops. Second, latency runs several seconds behind real time, which is fine for viewers but not for any production where someone needs to react to the shot live.
For a hobbyist, neither limit matters. For professional broadcast, both are dealbreakers, which is why news, sports, and live-event teams use a different approach.
When to step up to professional broadcast
