The Dock 3 turns a drone from something a person carries to a scene into something that lives at the site. The station stores the aircraft, keeps it charged, opens on command, launches it, flies the programmed route, recovers it, and closes again. Every part of that cycle is managed remotely through DJI FlightHub 2, so the operator can be in a dispatch center, an office, or a truck two states away.
That changes what a drone program is. A handheld Matrice 4T needs a trained pilot to drive out and deploy it. A docked Matrice 4TD is already overhead while the first unit is still en route, and it flies the same perimeter patrol at 2 a.m. on a Sunday that it flew on Monday afternoon, without anyone remembering to do it.

The hardware is the easy part of a dock program. Before you write the spec, plan for these:
Connectivity
The dock has a gigabit Ethernet port. If the site has no wired network, 4G requires the DJI Cellular Dongle 2, which is sold separately, plus a data plan. Reliable connectivity is the single most common thing that delays a go-live.
FlightHub 2 licensing
Dock operations run through DJI FlightHub 2, which is licensed software. Ask us for current licensing options when you request a quote so the software line is on the same page as the hardware.
Power at the site
100 to 240 V AC with up to 800 W draw. A rooftop or fence-line install usually means running a dedicated circuit, and that is an electrician, not a drone dealer.
Regulatory authorization
Flying with a pilot maintaining line of sight falls under standard Part 107. Flying beyond visual line of sight, which is the whole point of a dock, requires FAA authorization. Most programs start with a visual observer and expand from there.

It does not have to stay on a roof

If you are starting a program in 2026, buy the Dock 3. The Matrice 4D series is a generation ahead of the 3D series in sensing and obstacle avoidance, and the Dock 3 adds a wider operating temperature range and the IP56 seal. The Dock 2 only makes sense if you already own Matrice 3D or 3TD aircraft and want to add stations without replacing them.

Which drones work with the Dock 3?
The DJI Matrice 4D and Matrice 4TD. These are dock-specific versions of the Matrice 4 series with fixed arms and an IP55 rating, built to live outdoors in the station. The handheld Matrice 4E and 4T do not dock, and the Dock 2 aircraft (Matrice 3D and 3TD) are not compatible with the Dock 3.
Does the Dock 3 work with the Matrice 400?
No. The Matrice 400 is a manually piloted aircraft with a much larger payload ecosystem. The Dock 3 is designed around the Matrice 4D series only.
Do I need a pilot for a dock program?
Yes. Autonomous does not mean unlicensed. A Part 107 certificated remote pilot is responsible for the operation. Flying beyond visual line of sight with no observer requires FAA authorization on top of that. Most agencies begin with a visual observer program and pursue BVLOS authorization once they have operational history.
What does the dock need at the install site?
AC power (100 to 240 V, up to 800 W), a network connection (gigabit Ethernet, or 4G through the separately sold DJI Cellular Dongle 2), a level mounting surface, and clear airspace above it. Physical installation and initial FlightHub 2 configuration typically takes a trained technician a working day.
How long does the aircraft take to recharge in the dock?
About 27 minutes from 15 percent to 95 percent at 25°C, per DJI. In practice that supports near-continuous patrol coverage with a single aircraft, since a mission rarely drains the battery fully.
Is the DJI Dock 3 NDAA compliant?

What happens if the cellular connection drops mid-mission?
The aircraft keeps executing its programmed mission on its onboard flight controller. If the link is not restored within the configured timeout, it follows its lost-link behavior, which is normally a return to the dock. Sites where the mission is safety-critical should plan a wired Ethernet connection or redundant cellular coverage.
